What La Costa - South actually is
Before the resort, this was ranchland. An 1886 La Costa Land and Water Company venture toward Batiquitos Lagoon failed for lack of drinking water, so the hills stayed thinly settled until the 1960s. Rancho La Costa opened on 10 July 1965 as a residential resort, and homes, condos and later tracts filled the surrounding canyons.
