Where to Listen to Outdoor Music This Fall In North County

Summer may be winding down but the music scene is heating up For the next few months, there are several music venues around northern San Diego that offer a great lineup. No matter what is on your play list, there is plenty for everyone. From rock to country and indie; there's a concert for every taste.

Adventurous Music by the Beach

The Carlsbad Music Festival starts Friday, August 25 and runs through the 27th. Expect a long list of acts from both the ticketed and free stages. Enjoy bands such as Julia Holter, Jonathan Morgan, and Daniel Pate and free bands such as the Midnight Pine, G Burns Jug Band, Clint Davis and the Night Doctors.

Celtic Folk and Rock Music Amid the Vikings

The Viking Festival kicks off on September 23 and runs through the 24 in Vista. This is a heritage event so expect costumes, ethnic food and drink, competitions and, or course, Vikings.

Music For the Revolution

On October 8th, grab a lawn chair and head to Temecula for a concert on the golf course. This event benefits the Fallbrook Food Pantry and environmental causes surrounding San Onofre beaches.

Oceanside Music Festival

The Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation puts on events year-round. This October 10th, they are hosting Blue Monday which features Jazz and Blues. This is an amazing venue as the festival pairs local professional talent with up-and-coming students. This is not only an outstanding community event; its proceeds go towards funding scholarships.

Music Through the Decades

The SoCal Music Association is hosting a gala event on October 13th with music from the 60's, 70's and 80's. Proceeds will go toward music programs for children with autism.

North County has a lot of musical muscle. There are major events happening every month and most mix local talent with national professionals. Buy your tickets now and get ready for some great music

The Best Beaches in North County California

One of the reasons living in the North County California area is so exceptional is the access to such terrific beaches it provides. Here are some of the best beaches worth exploring in North County and Carlsbad California.

Moonlight State Beach

This is a family-friendly beach that has it all, There's convenient parking, fire pits and picnic areas, a snack shop, and showers for rinsing off. Downtown Encinitas is within walking distance for additional dining options. Early arrivals have a good chance at the additional benefit of watching dolphins at play.

Carlsbad State Beach

This beach provides a variety of activities from swimming and sunbathing to scuba diving and surfing. Not only are there amenities like bathrooms and showers but the beach even has Wi-Fi. The beach lies below over 200 campsites at the 44-acre state park and superb sunsets are routine.

Torrey Pines State Beach

Below the bluffs and trails just south of Del Mar lies almost three miles of beaches at Torrey Pines. This beach not only provides for some quality swimming and sunbathing time but you are always close to a nice challenging hike up one of the trails. Del Mar City Beach – If you can get past the parking issues, this beach offers some extraordinary views as a nice children's play area. This beach stretches about two miles and is convenient to the unique dining and shopping in Del Mar.

Fletcher Cove Park

Enjoy amazing views from Solana Beach's Fletcher Cove Beach Park on the deck, on the grass or on the sand. There's also a playground and basketball court here. Plenty of metered parking is available as is residential parking. Enjoy a variety of dining and drinking options that are nearby.

See the Wildflowers Around North County

While most Southern Californians are headed out to Anza Borrego Desert to see this year’s record super bloom, you can see beautiful wildflowers right here in North County San Diego. We were lucky enough to have a wonderful rainy season that has led to gorgeous bursts of color everywhere, from along the freeway to your own front yard. Here are a few places around town that will save you the drive to the desert.

The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch, Carlsbad

Perhaps the most famous place in North County to get your fill of beautiful blooms is The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch located right off the 5 freeway and Palomar Airport Road. While not exactly "wildflowers," your family is sure to have a memorable time walking among the rainbow colored rows of ranunculus or taking the tractor ride to tour the whole property. You can even buy a bunch to take home with you Be sure to stop at the strawberry fields on Cannon Rd on your way out for some of the most delicious strawberries anywhere.

Buena Vista Park, Vista

Located near Shadowridge golf course in vista, is Buenavista Park. This is a popular park all year round with a small duck pond and many walking trails. Right now you can see wildflowers throughout the park along the walking trails including wild mustard, Foxglove, and many other varietals. This park also offers wonderful views of the surrounding cities San Marcos and Carlsbad from the top of the hill. Why not pack a picnic and head over here this weekend?

Guajome Lake Park, Oceanside

Guajome Lake Park in Oceanside is another Great place for families to enjoy the fantastic weather this weekend. Walkers can enjoy the flowering trees as well as native Southern California wildflowers. This is park also offers camping for families who want to make their visit a weekend long event. Visit the Guajome Lake Webiste for more details.

Leo Carrillo Ranch, Carlsbad

The historic Leo Carrillo Ranch in Carlsbad, is famous for many reasons including the wild peacocks and the historic buildings once owned by actor and Preservationist, Leo Carrillo. What some people don’t know is that the valley was once called “Rancho de los Quiotes” or Ranch of the Spanish Daggers after the native yucca plants. Today, huge yucca plants can be seen throughout the property, as well as many blooming succulents and even some beautiful wisteria. You will definitely see the feisty peacocks and you may even see a local artist painting a landscape of the beautiful setting. More details can be found on the Friends of Leo Carrillo Ranch website.

Going Coastal? Five Great Reasons to Consider Living in Downtown Carlsbad

Coastal California living doesn't get any more laid back and relaxed than the lifestyle to be found in the downtown Carlsbad area. Residents can enjoy sun-drenched days at the beach and a variety of outdoor activities, as well as a wide range of shops and boutiques for an afternoon of shopping fun. With all that Carlsbad has to offer, maybe its time to see what the North County area has to offer you.

Surf, Sand, and Water

Downtown Carlsbad living means experiencing the beauty of the Pacific Ocean every single day. Residents and guests enjoy the opportunity to pursue a wide variety of water sports, including fishing, surfing, body boarding, kayaking, stand-up paddling, fishing and more. Ranked as one of the top ten best beaches, Carlsbad State Beach is a family friendly beach offering comfortable accommodations, entertainment, and quality dining options, all served up on soft sandy beaches, perfect for sunbathing or beach volleyball with friends.

Shopping from Boutiques to Farmer's Markets and Beyond

Downtown Carlsbad, and in particular, Carlsbad Village offers shopping choices sure to please. A haven for artists and antique enthusiasts alike, residents and guests can enjoy searching for just the right piece of original artwork or an antique treasure that could become your next family heirloom. Even shopping for food is easy, thanks to an abundant supply of locally grown produce available at the State Street Farmer's Market each Wednesday.

Nightlife in Carlsbad offers a chance to enjoy a variety of local cover bands, such as the ones to be found at the popular Coyote Grill. No matter what you want to do for fun, downtown Carlsbad delivers

Divine Dining

If you love to enjoy new dishes and sample a wide range of culturally-inspired meals, you will love the multitude of dining choices to be had in downtown Carlsbad. From the traditional tacos and burritos, compliments of Cessy's and Senor Grubby's, to Vigilucci's popular pasta, seafood, or steaks, the variety of flavors and choices are always fresh and exciting. Other popular spots for dining include Campfire, Relm Wine Bistro, or choose the casual atmosphere of the Pizza Port, 83 Degrees or a new comer to the area, Barrel Republic.

The coastal lifestyle could not be complete without the many opportunities offered throughout the downtown Carlsbad area. Perhaps a lovely walk along the beach sounds inviting? Or an afternoon riding bikes with the family along the boardwalk?
A Few of our Favorite Holiday Things in North County

The holidays are in full swing in North County. We are in the holiday spirit here at The Lund Team and thought that we would share a few of our favorite things and spread the holiday cheer

"We love taking the grandkids to LEGOLAND every year to see the park decorated for the holidays and the SNOW It's so great to have such a fantastic theme park right in our own backyard." -Carlton Lund

"Heading over to Weidner's for Poinsettias is a great tradition that we do each year that also supports a local business. A few years ago, I was honored to take a personal greenhouse tour with one of the "treasures" of North County, Evelyn Weidner. My cousin, Nancy Lund, was visiting from Florida and I wanted to show her some of the unique assets we are lucky to enjoy here.

Weidner's offered free Poinsettia Greenhouse tours and we were SO fortunate to have the "one and only" Evelyn, give us a private tour. Evelyn and her husband were friends of the Ecke's and moved down here from Central California in the 1960's. It was wonderful to learn about the history of their business from Evelyn herself who was 84 years young at the time. Please support them ...Buy your Poinsettias this year from Weidner's located off of Leucadia Blvd and Piraeus near the I-5 Fwy. It is open to the public to purchase some of the most gorgeous Poinsettias and plants that I have ever seen." - Sandy Lund

"The Sawdust Art Festival in Laguna Beach is my favorite spot to enjoy with friends and family during the Christmas Season. It has a Santa village feel and is mystically fun for anyone that is into art and crafts of all styles. Our cousin, Christian Drake has a booth there and artists like Wyland have been part of this great community." - William Lund

"My kids love the Coaster Holiday Express train from Oceanside to Solana Beach every year. They get to meet with Santa and his elves and sing along with carolers in a beautifully decorated train. It is definitely a highlight of the season" -Tyson Lund

"We love going to the Garden of Lights in Encinitas at the San Diego Botanic Garden each year. The whole family gets dressed up and we head over to see Santa and sip hot chocolate. The gardens are really spectacular lit up at night. Some nights they even have horse-drawn wagon rides and snow for the kids to play in" -Garrett Lund

"Our family's favorite holiday tradition is curling up in our jammies on the couch and watching Christmas movies with hot cocoa. Our favorites are Christmas Story, Elf, and Christmas Vacation. We also celebrate Christmas Eve at the Valley Center Firehouse with the other Rincon Firefighter families" - Emmy Banister

"I love driving around to some of our local neighborhoods to look at all the Christmas lights Knob Hill in San Marcos is always a favorite and Christmas Card Lane in Rancho Penasquitos and Candy Cane Lane in Poway go all out" -Karlie Chudomelka

"The Encinitas Holiday Parade at the beginning of December is a great event with floats and bands heading down historic Highway 101" - Jeff Pashby

What's your favorite holiday tradition in North County? Share it with our readers in the comments

Great Things to Do in North County This Thanksgiving Week

Thanksgiving week in North County already promises to be filled with lots of great things to do with visiting family and friends. Here are a few highlights and ideas.

Get Moving at a Turkey Trot in Encinitas or Oceanside

Test your trotting abilities at the annual Encinitas Turkey Trot & Food Drive starting at 7 a.m. under the Encinitas sign on Highway 101. Choose the 5K or 10K run and help raise money for the North County Chapter of the San Diego Food Bank.

The famous O’side Turkey Trot gives individuals and groups a chance to run either 5K or 10K for local non-profits. Starts at 6 a.m. and runs until 10:30 a.m. Includes a costume contest, digital photos and medals for registered participants.

Try Oceanside's New Speakeasy

In olden days speakeasies were secret spots where a select few could enjoy libation in a quiet, hidden setting. The newly opened 101 Proof is a modern, yet very authentic version here in our very own North County. Just like historic speakeasies, you need a password to enter, which you can access on their Instagram page every Thursday. Reservations are needed, and with a maximum crowd of just 40 the sooner you reserve, the better. If you decide to try it out, let us know what you think

Support Small Local Businesses

Small business Saturday (the 1st Saturday after Thanksgiving) is bound to be a cornucopia of bargains this year in North County. Shop in Carlsbad Village, Downtown Encinitas, Oceanside, or any of our fantastic local businesses and show your support for the small businesses that make North County so extraordinary

Get in the Holiday Spirit at the Theater

From December 1 through the 18th, the Broadway Vista is putting on “A Nice Family Christmas.” Tickets are just $23.50.
