Living in the North County San Diego area has some big advantages. One of them are the many hiking and biking trails in the area. For those who haven’t ventured onto any of the trails or those who want to incorporate more outdoor activities in their lives, here are some highlights.

San Elijo Lagoon

Length: 3 Miles
Difficulty: Easy

This trail is a 3 mile hiking trail that is fun and relaxing for the whole family. This is also a pet friendly trail, so feel free to bring Fido along. The trail is located between Solana Beach and Encinitas.  It also extends inland to Rancho Santa Fe. There is minimal elevation gain and the skill level is considered easy. This trail is also good for bird watching and getting rid of stress. This trail is available for hiking year round.

Batiquitos LagoonBatiquois Lagoon in Carlsbad

Length: 3 Miles
Difficulty: Easy

Located close to Carlsbad, the Batiquitos Lagoon Trail is a total of 3 miles. It is available all year round and dogs may also enjoy the trail, but they must be leashed. The trail offers plant life, birds, wildlife, marshes, and of course, the lagoon. This trail is handicap accessible and strollers are allowed. There are some steep hills located at East End, Bella Lago, and Aviara Cove which are the trail heads. There is fishing allowed with a permit and throughout the year events are scheduled.

Rancho Carrillo Trail

Length: 4 Miles
Difficulty: Easy - Moderate

This trail is 4 miles in length and considered to be easy to somewhat difficult.  Parts of the trail are paved and are accessible for wheelchairs. Other parts of the trail are unpaved. This trail is a two-loop trail divided at Melrose Drive. The trail goes from flat to slightly hilly. It includes a freshwater marsh, grasslands that are non-native, open spaces, and bird, mammals, and reptiles. This is a real "get back to nature" trail you will enjoy.

Double Peak San Marcos

Length: 5 Miles
Difficulty: Moderately Difficult

The Double Peak San Marcos Trail is 5 miles out & back and is rated moderately difficult. It is located near San Marcos & San Elijo Hills with beautiful 360 degree views. If you hike the trail and the skies are clear, you could see as far as Mexico, San Clemente Island, San Bernardino Mountains, and Downtown San Diego. Parts of the trail are paved and other parts are rock and dirt. This is a trail that shows off some of our area's best features and it is pet friendly!
